Oliva Half Marathon 1:52:04
Today – the first Sunday in March – was the day of the Oliva Half Marathon, Oliva is a small town just down the coast from Gandia. It was run at the same time as the quarter-marathon (10.5km), with both sets of runners all starting together and the half-marathon competitors going round the circuit twice. The start time was 10.30am, with runners collecting their race numbers and “chips” from the municipal market building beforehand and then congregating on the main avenue for the start (and finish!).
The race was a circuit along the “passeo”, then on down to the beach area, back up to the start point, and then the whole thing over again – at least for the half-marathon runners. Some 800 entrants participated in total, with approximately 470 completing the 21km half-marathon and 366 finishing in the shorter 10.5km race. It was a near perfect day for the event too, with a clear sky and temperatures around 21c, more sunshine than had been forecast, only down side was a blustery wind that got up on occasions down near the beach. As usual in these town events, there was a great atmosphere for it all, with the townspeople turning out to cheer everybody along the way.
Competitors were of all ages and abilities, with a mixture of running club entrants as well as individual runners, but everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion and had a great time.
The race was won by Salva Palero Martinez in a time of 1:18:11 Last Runner home in 2:29:49
